Hi all. Just wondering if anyone knows if Chucho Valdes is the author of that popular piece or he's just arranged it and it's someone else's work? Any idea of where to get sheet music of it?

I know nothing about Chucho Valdes or Irakere, but if you mean the piece of music that was used as a background (played by Narciso Yepes) in the french 1952 film "Jeux interdits" ("Forbidden games", "Juegos prohibidos"), the jury is still out as to who wrote it.

You are not likely to get any pointers to sheet music from this forum, because this forum strives to respect copyrights, and the copyright status of that music is very unclear. But if you google for "Romanza" or "spanish romance" you may be able to find the sheet music. It has been "arranged" for the guitar by an unknown number of people, but the "arrangements" tend to be almost identical.

Here you go Vic, 5 pages of delightful reading on who wrote this piece. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10646&start=0 Actually some excellent posts in this thread.

Finding a free sheet score is very easy with Google. Its a wonderful piece that's a little more difficult than it sounds. About a grade 4. But worth learning and it does impress even when played so so.

Thanks heaps. Yep, that's it. Great reading, thanks again.
I played it when learning guitar at musical school in Russia some 25 years ago and after reading the discussion I recalled that it was called "Romance" by Gomez in the Russian sheet music. That's exactly what I was looking for :bravo:

BTW, Irakere (and Chucho Valdes - their leader) is a very good jazz group from Cuba. Worth looking at :D

vic,

you're right that Chucho Valdés is an outstanding pianist -- but I'm really surprised that Irakere should have played an arrangement of "Romance", as you seem to imply (are you really sure!?) --- let alone Chucho being the composer. It's not their style at all. -- Then again with Chucho one never knows.

BTW if you really want to know, you can contact Chucho via his official web site, just google it.

Cheers,

if you mean the "Romance" as heard in the movie "Forbidden Games", it was not written by anybody. It is traditional. There are many versions, some good, some awful. Some guitar anthologies have dummed down versions.
I play a very nice arrangement titled "Giochi proibiti" and "Anonimo" and (rev. A. Gambini)
I dont remember where I got it but for sure I downloaded it from a site. You'll have to google under Romance guitar sheet music.

Some players are scared of the second section in E major for some reason. There are a couple of 4 fret stretches.
The whole piece is not very hard to play, but you really have to get into this piece or it will sound like a plain old solo.
